This world-class site rises up steeply from the banks of the Mosel, just across the river from the estate. The vines, many very old ungrafted stock, stand in dark, highly weathered clayey slate. It captures the heat of sunny days, returning that warmth to the vines on cooler nights. The cycle enhances the typical mineral notes in the grapes. While the higher alcohol levels for these wines have some of the markers of more southerly winegrowing regions, the elegant stylings and fine acidity bear the unmistakable stamp of a Mosel upbringing. The wines are rich, deep and spicy with dried spice aromas reminiscent of pepper, clove and nutmeg alongside fruit notes of orange zest, grapefruit and quince.
